2011 DALLE NOSTRE MANI “101” CHIANTI CLASSICO, TUSCANY
From Sangiovese grapes with a touch of Canaiolo added. The “101” is organically farmed and well on its way to certified organic status. Give it some air—maybe an hour or so—and you’ll flesh out the wine’s pure, elegant notes of dark cherries and violets. Just right for chicken or pasta in tomato sauce, or for a bubbling, crisp pizza!
2012 SANKT ANNA ÜRZIGER WÜRZGARTEN RIESLING KABINETT, MOSEL
Sustainably-produced Riesling from this superb value-producer in Mosel. Bracing, dry, and more minerally—flinty, even—than we remembered from our initial tasting. Just a hint of petrol and a whiff of flowers linger in the background. Versatility non-pareil! Drink this with veggies, chicken, light fish dishes, Asian food, etc.
2011 DOMAINE BAROU SYRAH, NORTHERN RHONE
Certified organic. Notes of black cherry, blackberry, cedar and the crushed black pepper typical of St. Joseph, where Emmanuel Barou’s winery stands. Barou recommends drinking this with barbecue, fowl, red meats, cheese—even dark chocolate!
2012 J. BOUCHON CANTO NORTE, MAULE VALLEY, CHILE
Chilean red made in the style of Right bank Bordeaux, not surprisingly given Julio Bouchon’s Bordeaux lineage. 75% Merlot, with the balance comprised of Cab Sauv, Cab Franc and Carmenere. Dark berries with a light herbal touch. Pair with the hearty winter stews and roasts you must be making to fend off the cold.
2011 SCHEU GRAUER BURGUNDER TROCKEN, PFALZ
Grauer Burgunder (aka Pinot Gris) done in an off-dry style, although given its racy acidity, you’ll hardly register the extra residual sugar. Fragrant peach fruit and terrificminerality. Having Chinese or Thai food for dinner? Look no further.
2005 DON JACOBO RIOJA RESERVA, SPAI N
90% Tempranillo, 10% Garnacha, aged 18 months in used French and American oak. We carry virtually all the Don Jacobo wines; we love them for their freshness and balance. This reserva, already nine years old, remains lively and bright, and lands on the sweet spot that balances oak and fruit. Pair with Manchego and chorizo, but also with braised veggies and— por supuesto— roast lamb.
