In 1860, Anton Simcic bought a farm in Medana near Ceglo in the appellation of Goriska Brda and began growing grapes and winemaking. Five generations later, Marjan Simcic follows in his forefathers’ footsteps, making wine using the most natural and traditional ways. The small estate’s 18 hectares of vineyards that straddle the Slovenian-Italian border, are only 20 km from the sea and are protected from the Julian Alps. They offer the ideal climate conditions for the thick layers of marl and sandstone (opoka) in which the old vines grow. They are then cultivated by hand without any chemical fertilizers or insecticides to produce 90,000 bottles consisting of three lines: classic, complex and opoka cru.
